OBITUARY / FUNERAL PROGRAM DESIGN TIPS

An obituary is a written statement sharing the news of someones passing. This announcement not only shares the birth and death date, but it usually includes a minimum of one photo of the individual, along with highlights of their accomplishments, lifes journey and even a view of their personality. An obituary also, usually shares the details of any public service for the deceased.
 
Through the years, people posted obituaries as public announcements in newspapers. Now, digital news platforms have digital pages for obituary announcements. Or, you might prefer to publish the obituary through a funeral home or memorial website or even create a video slideshow to pat tribute to your loved one.


Writing an obituary can be like write a screenplay. You decide where the specific details fit in the text, with an emphasis one showing the deceased personality and expression of love and respect.

Here are some guidelines you can follow to cover the most important details that should be included in your obituary:

Death Announcement: Often includes the place and date of death. You can choose to include or not include additional information.

Life Events: What major life events should you highlight? Include graduation, marriage, children or major accomplishments related to career or hobbies.

Family Members: It is common to list surviving family members in order of importance based on relation. For example, spouse and children first, followed by parents and then siblings.

Event Details: If you are inviting the public to the services, share information about the memorial or funeral times, and location.

Donation Information: Fundraiser details, memorial funds, or flower donation information is common to include at the end of an obituary.

Photos: Always include at least one photo of the person. It’s common to include a recent picture, as well as a family picture or throwback to the earlier years of a person’s life. We also suggest a photos page, if room allows, to showcase family members and your loved one doing activities they loved. Usually, 12-15 photos is a good amount to have in the obituary. Photos should be as high of resolution as possible. If scanning a hardcopy photo, set your scanner to "high res" or "print res". If you have digital photos, try to use the photos directly from the camera first and use photos from the internet (like Facebook, etc) as a last resort, as they are low res and will likely print pixilated or blurry.

What's the trick to a good obituary?

There isn’t a right or wrong way to write a good obituary. The mission is to honor the personality and the accomplishments of the deceased and the uniqueness they shared with those they knew, worked with and loved. Showcasing these in the text of an obituary shows your love and gratitude for how the person impacted you and others through their life.
